Must Watch TV Shows

It seems that lately there we have had a large set of new and diverse TV shows. With such a large content of great shows to watch on television i thought i would be make a list.

Disclaimer: Empire was purposely left off the lift.

HBO

Insecure – Issa Rae brings it. My new favorite show. Although i got put on late, i watched all 8 episodes in one day. Once i started i could NOT stop. The characters all bring a strong sense of realism that is sometimes missed in comedy. The show doesn’t have a dry spot. That could be because its only half an hour per episode, but i’m inclined to attribute this to stellar writing.

ABC

How to Get Away with Murder – This drama packed show doesn’t take a break. Every episode is amazingly written. Viola Davis is a STAR. She shines in every seen, even her walk has a script of its own. Plus how often do you see TV actresses with Oscar worthy talent.

Blackish- Tracee Elise Ross is star in this show. The natural comedic value and the message packed into every episode makes it an instant family. Plus it has cute kids…whats not to love about this. Its not a fluff sitcom like we have seen in the past with other shows. Blackish has a life of its own and manages to create its own space.

Fresh off the boat- Hysterical show about and immigrant family and growing up in the unknown. Laugh out loud funny. I do have to admit that i was hesitant to watch this show. I previously put it off as an attempt to turn the immigrant struggle into comedy or even a way to make humor of asian culture. I was wrong the show focuses more on the humor of growing up with parents who are anything but average. That i feel everyone can relate to.

NBC

Chicago Fire/PD/Med – All the different variations of the Chicago shows are great. They give you everything you need. From a crime drama to a medical drama. The shows are well written and include great actors. Theses shows aren’t a weekly appointed for me. Instead they have become a staple, that can be watched at any point.

Law And Order SVU – I have to admit this is my favorite show. The plot lines never disappoint. Its great to also binge watch on Netflix and HULU.

FX

American Horror Story – I just only recently started watching this show. the plot lines are great. Because each season has a new plot line, you can never truly get bored. Also the writers can’t ruin this show as easily as shows like Sleepy Hallow and The Vampire Diaries were destroyed. It also makes an amazing binge watch on Netflix.

Covergirl covers for James Charles

So as you might have heard James Charles was named the first male face of Covergirl. This is big for obvious reason. Honestly when I first found out i was very nonchalant about it all. I thought he had a very appealing face and makeup suited him well. It did help that it angered old butt hurt conservatives. Well this past weekend that all changed. James tweeted a series of ignorant tweets about Africa.

When i saw the tweets i was angry but also hurt. Angry because as a Nigerian American, i find people’s ignorance about Africa so infuriating.

  1. It’s not a country (No matter what Raven Symone said)
  2. There are actually things there
  3. The many countries in Africa have become a hub for technology and many advancement
  4. AGAIN IT IS NOT A COUNTRY

The tweet was not only racist it was also stupid. Not all of Africa experienced the Ebola epidemic. It was mobilized in very few countries. We don’t even know what country in Africa James was talking about. Well Covergirl decided to respond with the most passive series of tweets i have ever seen from a major corporation.

This issues moves far beyond James Charles, it again highlights white privilege especially that of white men. It doesn’t matter that they are gay they are still privileged. Not to have this drawn out but we need to take heed and call out all scenarios of racism we see. Because if we are blind to the mistreatment of one people, we are submissive o the inequality of ALL PEOPLE. Shame on Covergirl for not taking a bigger stance, instead the sugarcoat racism as a differing of opinion. The last point i want to make; will any of the black Covergirl’s speak out? It is left to be written…

Beyonce had the best album of the year

So I just finished watching the 2017 Grammy’s. I should be in asleep now, but I am in bed typing this on my iPhone 7. If that doesn’t tell you how strongly I feel I don’t know what will. I listened to all the albums nominated in AOTY and ROTY. Adele’s 25 was a strong album, it marked a Stella come back. Hello was a strong single, so I did not have a problem with it getting ROTY; in fact I think she deserved that award.

Beyoncé’s lemonade on the other hand was the best album I have heard in a while. (Anti should have also been nominated). Beyoncé put her heart on that album, it told a story. Forget the visual aspect (which slayed) the lyrics invoked a feeling like no other. We got a story of love, betrayal and ultimately forgiveness.

After my anger for the snub passed I went on to search for a why. A black artist has not won AOTY year since 2008. It’s not because of a lack of talent. Taylor swifts 1988 won AOTY, with fluff such as never getting back together. So in the end I come to the conclusion that the academy is deeply flawed. Beyoncé did win intact this year, she brought light to underrepresented brown boys and girls, with empowering lyrics. Whether she knows or not, Beyoncé has sealed her place as an icon. Maybe next time she’ll win. But until then I hope ALL black artists and entertainers start and continue to attend black award shows. In the end representation matters. Go where you are celebrated not tolerated.

Destroyed Denim

Every few years it feels as though we have a new trend of denim. We had the acid wash denim trend and now it seems destroyed denim is in. Contrary to popular opinion Kanye west did not start the wealthy hobo trend with the yeezy collection. Every one needs a pair of light colored destroyed jeans. For the fashionista on a budget Forever21.com is a great option for cheap but great quality denim. I own a few pair from them myself. Topshop is also affordable. Higher end brands tend to bring better quality and hold up better. I decided to list the denim below based on price. Some i have/owned, others i just prefer to stare at (broke college student here).

Invest in a pair of nice sandals, that don’t look like shower shoes. If you live anywhere that the weather is below 60 degrees F, this doesn’t apply to you. Honestly i truly am sorry, for you i would suggest boots and a transfer application for a college that receives sun.

Ciara the Fashion Icon in the making

Ciara the MOM

Ciara the SINGER

Ciara the Fashion ICON

Its no secret that Ciara is vastly underrated. She has served us with hits such as Goodies, 1,2 Step, Oh, Ride, Body Party, I Bet, LSM, Never Ever, Like a Boy, Promise, and i could keep going but i won’t. Lately she has been putting her feet into the fashion world. With daring outfits such as the ones she wore to host the BBMAs, or her risky grammy awards dress. The singer once again proved her superiority with her CFDA awards dress. Some would say it was inspired by Beyonce’s dress in her Hold UP video, i beg to differ. Ciara wore the dress last night. I find that more often that not clothes are wearing Beyonce. Ciara know what it mean to own a own and she certainly owns a red carpet. With her upcoming nuptials i am sure designers are feigning to dress her. I have feeling she will go with her beloved Roberto Cavalli.
